Art in the Age of Zoom

Dear Artsperts:
A highlight of the season for us is attending the opening receptions at your gallery and meeting the artists you represent. What are your plans for this season with restrictions on social engagements and travel? Will there be other opportunities to get to know your artists?
Distantly Meeting

Dear Distantly,
You are right that since 1964 our Sunday evening opening receptions with the artists have been a highlight for patrons, our artists and us each season. There is always excitement with receiving a shipment of new works for a show, curating the show, and debuting the works to patrons at an opening reception with the artist. With the start of our 58th Season in November, the only elements that have shifted in its nature is the opening reception to meet the artists, with our solution being to offer a virtual alternative.

In preparation for our 58th Season, we have a full season of planned exhibitions, just as always. As in years past we worked with each artist to select works for the season and we continue to physically install exhibitions at both our locations.

We invite you to stop by our location at 382 12th Ave S where you will find a quiet and relaxing atmosphere in our 2,500 square-foot gallery. We are open Tuesday-Saturday 11-5 Alternatively, you may wish to make a private appointment to visit our completely private gallery at 599 9th St N, suite 309, in the New Horizon Bank Building on US 41 N.

To provide alternative opportunities for patrons to view the exhibition and to "meet" the artist, we have gone virtual. Our YouTube channel is filled with videos of exhibitions, sharing stories of the artists we represent, and interviews with our artists. The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College conducted several talks with artists over the past few months, including two with artists we represent: Reynier Llanes and Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso.

While it is hard to keep things as they were, we hope to offer the same level of engagement as in the past through the use of technology. Art can be a great comfort during difficult times and where-ever you may be this Season, we hope that you are able to join us in the enjoyment of discussing art with artists, even if it is from your cell phone or computer.

Sincerely,
The Artsperts
