Amy Ernst is the fourth generation of artists in her family; her great-grandfather Philip was a portrait painter, grandfather Max the surrealist master, and her father,
leading abstract painter Jimmy Ernst. Amy’s work in collages and monoprints adds her own unique element to a profound family legacy. Amy is able to convey a beauty and
comfort through the mysterious imagery of her compositions.
In 1977 she received a B.A. in Theater; 1984 an M.A. in Arts Administration, Indiana University, Bloomington. Afterwards returning to NYC she studied at The Arts Students League,
Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, DieuDonne Peppermill and Center for Book Arts she has incorporated her set designs into these collaged forms. Since l988 she has exhibited
nationally and internationally.
Artist Statement:
Over the years, my travels have been my greatest teacher.
I have taken those memories and have incorporated them into my collages, paintings and prints. Each creation is always a surprise.
The result even for a planned work is unexpected. I rarely layout or sketch my work. It is all about spark and inspiration.
My travels have been extensive and so have the influences from the Spirituality and Culture of India, Northern Italian; Flemish artists
from Holland and Belgium to the Americas. The vistas and canyons from Arizona, Colorado’s rivers to the beautiful Floridian, North Carolinian
beaches to New York, Massachusetts and Vermont’s’ dense forests. Each element is a dreamlike collage, juxtaposed to one another.
They seem to emerge and influence each other outside of my original intent. It is always a surprise even for me.
